Group Overview
Special Air Missions Group (SAM) is responsible for developing and delivering Metrea’s Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), Special Mobility, and Aerial Firefighting (AFF) capabilities. SAM oversees the integration of new mission systems, ensuring operational readiness across specialized aviation operations. It manages fleet maintenance, regulatory compliance, and strategic partnerships to enhance mission effectiveness. By consolidating expertise and infrastructure, SAM ensures Metrea’s airborne capabilities remain adaptable and mission-ready across dynamic operational environments.
Position Summary
Within the Metrea Aviation Management System, the Safety Manager role has equivalence across Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulatory frameworks. The Safety Manager ensures that safety standards are consistently upheld within the Metrea Aviation Management System, and is responsible for risk and hazard analysis and management, safety assurance, safety promotion and safety training.
The Safety Manager supports, facilitates, and leads the implementation and maintenance of the Metrea Safety Management System (SMS), fostering an organizational culture of effective safety management, risk management, and occurrence reporting.
The Safety Manager acts independently of other managers within the organization and has, on safety matters, direct and immediate access to the Head of Flight Operations and all Metrea aviation management personnel.
Collaborating closely with the Metrea Head of Safety, Quality, and Training, the Safety Manager performs detailed safety audits, surveys, and inspections across all supported operations, fostering a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
The aim is to uphold and exceed industry safety standards by combining expertise and reinforcing the organization’s commitment to operational compliance and safety.
Role and Responsibilities
- Actively lead and support processes to identify potential hazards across all operational areas, ensuring a comprehensive approach to recognizing risks before they escalate.
- Conduct site inspections, operational assessments, and safety observations, encouraging input from personnel at all levels to uncover hidden or emerging hazards.
- Collaborate with the Head of Metrea Safety, Quality, and Training to align all hazard identification and risk management activities with relevant regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and organizational policies, procedures, and Emergency Response Plans (ERPs) to maintain compliance and enhance safety outcomes.
- Provide periodic and predictive reports on safety performance; regularly deliver comprehensive reports that include current safety metrics, trends, and analyses, incorporating predictive insights to identify potential risks and emerging issues, enabling proactive measures to enhance safety outcomes and mitigate future incidents.
- Establish and oversee robust processes for managing and updating safety management records, including policies, procedures, and incident reports; ensure all documentation aligns with applicable laws, industry standards, and organizational requirements, providing a clear and auditable trail to support regulatory inspections and internal reviews.
- Ensure the availability of comprehensive safety management training programs accessible to all personnel, including management, supervisors, and frontline staff; training should be tailored to address the specific risks, operational needs, and regulatory requirements of the organization.
- Provide advice on safety matters, offering comprehensive guidance and expertise on all safety related topics, ensuring that leaders and teams across Metrea are well-informed on best practices, compliance requirements, and risk management strategies.
- In collaboration with the Metrea Head of Safety, Quality, and Training, ensure initiation and follow-up of internal occurrence/accident investigations; promptly launching investigations to identify root causes, contributing factors, and potential systemic issues.
- Actively cultivate a culture of safety awareness across the organization that includes regularly engaging with personnel at all levels to ensure they understand and adhere to established safety protocols, procedures, and best practices.
Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree (any discipline).
- 6+ years of relevant and documented work experience, preferably in a comparable position, including quality and compliance monitoring systems, safety and risk management within an aviation operations environment.
- A deep understanding of the SMS framework, safety regulations, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, and national regulatory requirements and provisions on safety management.
- Knowledge of safety investigation techniques, root cause analysis, and technical report writing.
- Knowledge of risk assessment and mitigation strategies, safety audits, and continuous improvement processes.
- Knowledge of human factors in aviation.
- Ability to analyze safety data to anticipate potential risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- The ability to communicate complex safety issues clearly and effectively, both in writing and verbally.
- Be able to uphold the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior, ensuring that safety remains the top priority even in situations where operational efficiency or other business pressures may conflict.
- Proficiency in external communications tools (Outlook), internal communications tools (Teams), work management tools (Monday.com), knowledge/process management tools (SharePoint, Notion, Azure, Lucid), and SMS tools (Baldwin).
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skill.
- Exceptional level of critical thinking, analysis, creativity, problem solving, negotiation, conflict management, and time management.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time exempt position with typical working hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours and work shifts may change in accordance with department and business needs. Exempt Employees must have the ability to be on-call and available, as business needs require.
